Keep it under 50,000 URLs
Google's limit per sitemap file is 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. For larger sites, create a sitemap index pointing to multiple child sitemaps.
Use canonical URLs only
Only include the canonical version of each page — no session IDs, UTM parameters, or pagination variants. This prevents index dilution.
Update after publishing
Regenerate and resubmit your sitemap every time you publish new content, delete pages, or significantly restructure your navigation.
